Top Ten Surprises: Grocery Shopping for Smart Phone Junkies

Purchased at Sam's Club in February 2005

Interesting shopping experience Thursday night. My husband and I shopped together, which is usually a budget killer, and we used Fooducate to scan as we went. We attempted to find a happy medium between what we would actually eat and what was good for us. Surprisingly, it was not nearly as hard as I thought it would be.

Here are ten items that I got really excited about (yes, I’m a dork!):

  1. Uncle’s Bens 90 Second rice: (B-) This was a shock to me. I truly thought this would be really bad for you. Don’t get me wrong, it’s high in sodium but compared to cardboard pizza on a “don’t even ask me what’s for dinner” night, this is not bad.
  2. Gordon’s Grilled Tilapia: (B+) This is may not be “smack your momma” good but again, after a long day it’s nice to throw this on a foil lined baking pan and let it do it’s thing. Then toss it on top of some 90 second rice and your good with no mess and no stress!
  3. Honey Nut Cheerios: (B-) Yes, I know we all knew it was good for us… and yes I know the plain would have been better. But I won’t be tempted to add sugar to these… Makes a great breakfast, snack or dessert. I’d pretty much eat cereal for any meal.
  4. Pillsbury Strawberry Toaster Strudel: (D) AND
  5. Kellogg’s Frosted Strawberry Poptarts: (D+)
  6. I got really excited over these because after we scanned it we decided NOT to get it! We decided on trying something a little healthier for breakfast! Go Fooducate!
  7. Thomas’ English Muffin: (B-) This was our alternative breakfast to try out. We know we already love them, so it’s a matter of setting aside a few extra minutes to actually get to eat them!
  8. Egg-land’s Best Eggs: (A-) We really love boiled eggs and we don’t eat enough so we are going to try… this particular brand seems to last a bit longer.
  9. Wonderful Pistachios: (A) These are a staple in our house and if it wasn’t for the fact that they are an excellent snack (in moderation), I would grumble about the big price tag!
  10. Cod Fillets: (A-) Another favorite in our home! We love it blackened over Mahatma’s Yellow Rice, mmm, mmm good!

I’m sure the other shoppers were probably cussing me under their breath for taking my time but overall we made more smart choices than not, and somehow managed to save $40 more than usual… can’t beat that! I hope a few of the choices inspire you to try something new. Would love to hear your suggestions! That’s all I got for now, have a good night… www.gselite.com/healthy

Forcing myself to be miserable

English: A chocolate cake decorated with icing...

When I want something I get crazy obsessed. This goes for everything, especially food. I have found that if I cut myself off from something I want, it’s not pretty, for me or anyone within a ten foot radius. So the dieting mentality is not for me. But I think I’ve managed to find something that is for me, as cliché as it sounds, a lifestyle change. I’ve been working on it for a few months now and apparently it’s sticking.

I don’t refuse myself anything. I am simply trying to rethink what I want and adjust portion sizes. So if I want pizza, I have pizza. But I don’t eat half the pizza. If I’m hungry again later I eat a small snack, not an entire bag of chips.

This was still excruciatingly slightly painful at first. I was consuming an outrageous amount of calories when I began. But it’s gotten easier. Smart choices and smaller portions have begun to win out, most of the time. I still allow myself free days. I’m off today and thought today would be a free day, but so far I’ve not really eaten anything nutritionally unwise… maybe tomorrow, maybe not.

The key is not to force myself to be miserable. Life’s short, eat dessert first – but not the whole darn cake.  www.gselite.com/healthy

i HATE wheat bread… maybe

I really have tried to like wheat bread. And it’s not that I have an untouchable love affair with white bread either. I just can’t stand wheat bread. It’s like eating cardboard, and some it is like eating cardboard with flakes of dirt on it!

So when a friend of mine had mentioned she had found a wheat bread she liked, and it was only 35 calories a slice, I did not get overly excited. It looked soft, didn’t appear to have any dirt or chips of bark on it …hmmm. Did I really want to buy a whole loaf of bread again only to feed it to the pissed off  poor birds after one slice, not really.

But I did, and it’s actually quite good… now before I tell you the name let me warn you that it’s not the perfect wheat bread. The perfect wheat bread, nutritionally speaking, is not the wheat bread for me. But this is so much better than what I was eating and it received a B on the Fooducate scale. The winner is… Heiner’s Wheat Bread. For those of us who hate wheat bread.  www.gselite.com/healthy
